after playing 4k mania on and off for the past few years, i've started to really get sucked into it and i think i've made some pretty good progress so far but i can definitely notice my growth starting to slow down so i'm not sure where to go from here. normally on other games i just keep playing random songs and get better with time but i just feel really inconsistent with mania. obviously patience is key as i've only been grinding mania for a few days, but sometimes it feels like i am just getting flukes on some of my plays and i'm not really improving. maps above like 3.8 stars really feel like a mixed bag for me, sometimes i can't even read them and die, other times i do really well somehow. i typically try to get a bunch of pretty good scores before i bump up the difficulty but it doesn't really seem to be working here.

from some of my attempts on harder maps, i've noticed this one pattern that kills me or at the very least kills my accuracy. its looks kinda like stairs with a few doubles mixed in there, sometimes triplets too but rarely. this pattern just looks so dense to me and my brain kinda just turns off and plays it like stairs even though its not. that pattern is literally my archnemesis. i'd like to be able to practice it on an easier map but i'm not sure what its called.

this is also my first time being on a forum so how many of these posts can i do in a day? i have a bunch of other questions but i didn't think it was right to dump them all in one post.

Okay so for starters, the mania difficulty calculation SUCKS lol
If you feel like some 4* are just waaaay harder than others, thats why. Instead of looking for difficulties, try finding mappers who map the patterns you want to learn, so the difficulty scale is more consistent

I think improvement in mania is very non linear, sometimes I've felt like I haven't improved for months, even though I still am. You kinda just have to tough it out and trust the process. Play things that challenge you and be mindful of your acc.

Also could you go into the editor and map out the pattern and send a sc? I might be able to tell you what it is if I could see it exactly

I don't think theres a limit for posting as long as each topic is unique-ish.

for improving past 4 star, when i played 4k and was getting into 4 stars and when i was new to 4 stars in 6k i found that playing for S ranks made progression like really fast atleast in my case so focus on getting alot of S ranks. if you cant S a 4 star yet then S whatever you can and reach 4 star and progress through 4 star with S ranks. may be a skill wall, idk i quit 4k for 6k lol, but S ranks seem to stop working at around 5.2 stars. i know for 6k you gotta just keep going and youll go through but idk abt 4k. if you reach a wall, then start trying to sightread A rank stuff and play that chart every session until S rank

Is the pattern you're mentioning one like this? If so, I am in the same boat

yeah this would explain a lot, its been rare but there have been a few low 3 star maps that feel really hard too. does this apply in reverse? i have a few pretty good scores on maps with star ratings that feel really out of my skill level.

ive basically been rolling with this, i like S ranking a map before moving on from it. is it ever worth going for higher then S rank or should i stop there? i know other games have ranks for stuff around like 98% or 99% accuracy and i've tried to go for SS before but it feels really high. what even is the breakpoint for it?

yeah this is pretty close to what i'm struggling with, except sometimes it'll just be like chunks of that pattern.

some other questions that i felt didnt warrant another post:
the recommended beatmaps filter says 4.7 for me. how accurate is that thing and should i even bother with it?

the timings on mania feel really tight compared to other games i've played, will i just get better over time or should i be practicing on being more accurate? also whats the difference between marvelous and perfect for accuracy?

Yeah, the star rating of a map should usually just be taken as a very rough guideline unless you know the mapper/patterns etc. I'd honestly recommend just ignoring star rating and taking accomplishment for how hard a map feels to *you*. Always just take the W lol

Going for different acc percentages is completely up to you. I like coming back to maps after a while to improve my acc and see how far ive progressed. If you ever want to see yourself on leaderboards it wouldn't hurt to practice getting high acc on stuff below your skill level

It can be useful sometimes lol
I have no idea how its calculated bc mine is 8.4* and I cant play that diff for shit so idrk

Honestly its up to you to decide if its worth using or not

Okay so as you play it will naturally feel easier, but getting good marvelous to perfect ratios will take practice.

Also, with ScoreV1 (stable client), when calculating your acc percentage, MV and PF are both weighted the same, so you could have 100 marv and 100 perf and still SS with 100%. The difference is your score. Having a play with ONLY marv will earn you 1,000,000 which is the max you can earn on a map. Most people try to aim for anything above like 970k? It really depends on how acc focused you wanna be and the difficulty of the map.

I can go more in depth abt it if you want but I think that should cover a lot of the more important stuff

ScoreV2 is a whole other story but you dont have to worry abt it for now, unless you're playing tournaments or on lazer

Oh yeah and those patterns are jumpstreams (like 90% sure). Its one of the more popular patterns, so if you wanna find and practice them there are tons of map packs

only for developing consistency as in consistently hittingd marvs and improving how you hit patterns and stuff

advice link ill always give lol copy paste i have link of my words, mentions acc stuff here too

True, I tend to look at the SR as the note density of a map, irrespective of the what the pattern is. It similar to how the Random mod can make a map harder or easier but it never changes the SR of a map.

Viewing it through that lens works pretty well for me.

oh i actually play on lazer...

ty for the insights though, i feel a lot better about my scores now. i guess im basically at a skill wall for jumpstreams for the time being.
