Related osu!stable bug report: https://github.com/ppy/osu-stable-issues/issues/1286

With how bad H.264 is today, I've found myself having an issue: encoding a 2-minute video in H.264 at 480p lowest quality takes 20mb, more than the 17 limit. But encoding that very same video on H.265 at 720p medium quality takes just 13mb.

With how bad H.264 is, i really want to just ditch stable compatiblity and make the video only run on Lazer, as I think it's better to have a good quality 720p video that only runs on Lazer than a 240p pixelated mess that also runs on Stable

I know that Lazer only has about 1/5's of the osu! playerbase, but the resolution is so bad that I'd just turn off the video to be honest.

Unfortunately this is entirely dependent on whether devs want to prioritize adding this to stable or not. H265 would be absolutely WONDERFUL and make filesizes much easier to manage with better video quality, but we can not make any updates to RC unless it actually is functional. It is purely written there to make the technical limitations well known and easier to follow.

We have also been having issues where video playback has grown less stable over the years, especially in the editor, due to new video methods stable has memory leak issues with. I don't fully know the technical details but that's what I have observed with never having issues before vs. getting constant crashes when editing maps with videos now. I would hope this could be something that would be updated/fixed together, but stable isn't usually updated for this kind of thing and I don't know how feasible any such update actually is.

We are not at the point of adoption where we can make RC allow for things that work on lazer only. It would have to work on stable as well for general for where the majority of the playerbase is.

However, if you are getting 480p with 20mb for only a 2 minute video, I do have to wonder how busy it is to be that bad. There are methods to get decent quality for that length and size for the majority of videos, such as outlined in this guide here wiki/en/Guides/Compressing_files .

I thought that the video editor automatically compressed the video using the same techniques as HandBrake. Apparently not. Just lowered the file size to 2 mb.

Thanks!

EDIT: Oh wait I only compressed a quarter of the video. It compressed to 12mb. Still better.

I'll keep this open for the future. I (or someone else) will restart the discussion in several years when Lazer overtakes Stable.

At that point a new thread might be better than bumping this one, so let's better archive this. Also AV1 is more readily available in the same generation cuz someone (ideally whoever made your computer or graphics card, but can be you) need to pay to legally get an HEVC decoder

I'd love for h265 or equivalent open standards be usable but afaik a sizable amount of people still run hardware that does not decoding of newer codecs (even if h265 is old by now). Also, the performance hit for decoding videos made with newer codecs is usually greater which might be a deterrant.

Maybe sometime in the future we can leave the prehistoric h264 standard :prayge:

Archiving this thread, if it is more relevant in the future we can revisit it. It will stay as is for now.
