and Prototype was the original that was a novel then changed into Light Novel namely Fate Stay Night. A 12 minute clip of the anime version was shown somewhere. (Heard that they have no plans of releasing a series of it.)

I watched Clannad a few months ago and still firmly hold it as one of my favourite animes but it gave me an urge to find an anime with truly breath-taking art.

Ehh I guess you could try out Shiki for the vampires bit. Really anime has never delivered on the horror aspect for me. There is something that anime can't convey that 3D movies and shows can. As for gore... that isn't my thing

I have finished a few:
- Guilty Crown impressed me in every way except I'm on the fence about the story. I'm obsessed with the music and listen to it way too much. xD
- Eureka Seven I finished but wasn't particularly fond of it until the last ten episodes or so. Freaking kids pissed off to hell... I saw the first episode of the sequel and it turned me off instantly so I'll wait until it's done, then see what people say about it.
- Sword Art Online I do intend to watch once it's done, as I like to watch series all at once (or in chunks), not at a rate of one or two per week - unless it's going to be a long series like Inu-Yasha or Bleach.

These are all very different kinds of shows at their core.

If you want straight-up horror (like Higurashi), try Shiki or Ghost Hound (Ghost Hound is more unsettling and psychological, but eh).

If you want just plain ol' grimdark (like Mirai Nikki), try out Dean Wonderland or Gantz.

If you want something that explores dark, dramatic ideas/themes (like Steins;Gate), try Kaiba or Mawaru Penguindrum.

I really enjoyed watching Hyouka. Although it was really bashed by my friends due to it's 'pretentiousness' of being another moeblob and the 'lack of any complex writing or plot device whatsoever', I find it to be a great anime and have no regrets spending hours on end watching each and every episode thoroughly (trying to prove my friends wrong)
Other than that, I also enjoyed Medaka Box and Psycho-. Sadly, both titles are also hated by my friends

I'm sure you already watched this as it's still airing on this season I still mention it anyway, try Magi, it's a good fantasy anime with some adventure mixed in. You can also try Ixion Saga DT but that one don't really have any plot so far (more like a gag anime).

Other than that, maybe try Katanagatari, Tower of Druaga, Brave Soul (this ones a movie), and maybe Kyousogiga too (I don't know about this as I only watched the ova & and it still airing too)
